The Thornton Tomasetti Board of Directors and Managing Principals announce the promotion of Gary F. Panariello, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., to managing principal and Michael Gerasopoulos, P.E., and Julio C. Ravelo, R.A., to vice presidents in the New York City office. The international engineering firm also promoted Umakant Vadnere, P.E., to vice president in the Newark, N.J. office.
Dr. Panariello is a member of the Thornton Tomasetti Board of Directors. A recognized leader in forensic engineering, he has more than 20 years of experience in the research, design, investigation and construction of complex structures. His specialties include the dynamics of structures subjected to earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural and man-made events, structural failure investigations, advanced analysis and emergency response.
He is a licensed Professional Engineer in 12 states and a licensed Structural Engineer in California and Idaho. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and master of science, master of philosophy and doctoral degrees in civil engineering and engineering mechanics from Columbia University in New York. His professional memberships include Structural Engineering Association of New York, American Institute of Steel Construction and American Society of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Gerasopoulos, who joined the firm in 1998, has experience in the design, renovation and alteration of structures. He is also skilled in investigating structural failures, structural system assessments, due diligence and feasibility studies and peer reviews.
He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York and New Jersey, and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from City College of New York. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers.
Since joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2007, Mr. Ravelo has specialized in historic preservation. He has more than 27 years of experience with institutional and residential projects, including building envelope restoration and repair, condition assessment, infrastructure redevelopment and redesign.
Mr. Ravelo is a Registered Architect in New York and a member of the New York Society of Architects, Architectural League of New York and Construction Specifications Institute. He has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. Vadnere joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1998 and has substantial experience in the analysis, design and delivery of a wide range of projects including healthcare, commercial and residential buildings, sports facilities, aviation, research and laboratory, hospitality and parking.
Mr. Vadnere is a licensed Professional Engineer in Michigan. He has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Bombay in India and a master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction and American Society of Civil Engineers.
