Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announces that Co-founding Principal Charles Thornton, Ph.D., P.E., Hon. AIA, Hon. ASCE will receive an honorary doctorate in engineering from Manhattan College during its 171st Commencement ceremony on May 19th. Dr. Thornton, an alumnus of Manhattan College, is also scheduled to give the keynote address to approximately 750 graduates.
• Dr. Thornton founded the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (A.C.E.) Mentor Program, a nonprofit that offers training, guidance and scholarships to more than 60,000 high school students in the U.S. The initiative grew in part through collaboration with Manhattan College’s School of Engineering. Dr. Thornton is also a former member of the Manhattan College Board of Trustees.
• He has been involved in the design, construction, and analysis of billions of dollars worth of projects worldwide, including award-winning hospitals, arenas, high-rise buildings and airports.
• Dr. Thornton is also a recognized expert in collapse and structural failure analysis and has lead investigations of the collapse of the Hartford Coliseum Space Truss roof in Connecticut and the cooling tower scaffold collapse at Pleasants Power Station in Willow Island, W. Va.
• He received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from New York University.
