Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announced that Sowwah Square, a project for which it provided structural peer review services, construction site observation, and structural consulting services, has received the “2013 Best Tall Building in the Middle East and Africa” award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The mixed-use complex in in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates was completed in 2012. The award will be presented at the CTBUH 12th Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Ill. on November 7.
The CTBUH Best Tall Buildings awards recognize projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment. The projects must successfully integrate architectural form, building systems, sustainable design and safety.
• Thornton Tomasetti was hired by John Buck International, a joint venture between Mubadala Development Company and The John Buck Company. Goettsch Partners is the architect.
• The 5.7 million square-foot waterfront complex features four Class-A office towers, a state-of-the-art stock exchange, and high-end retail. The concrete office towers range from 470 to 554 feet tall, and the 174-foot-tall steel stock exchange is built on a 250,000 square-foot retail podium.
• Two, six-level parking structures with 5,200 spaces connect to the retail podium via enclosed passageways.
