Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announced that its newly relocated Philadelphia, Pa. office has achieved LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Philadelphia office is the firm’s first U.S. office to seek LEED for Commercial Interiors (CI) status following the passage of the corporation’s policy to LEED certify all sizeable office fit-outs. It is the second to achieve LEED CI Gold certification, after the firm’s Chicago, Ill. office.
• The firm’s office at 1700 Market Street in Center City Philadelphia offers more natural light, which reduces the use of electric lighting. Lighting power at the office has been reduced 19 percent from code.
• All furniture at the new office is regionally sourced, and made from recycled, nontoxic and low-emitting materials, which improve the air quality of the office and contribute to a healthful environment. The office’s kitchen also features a sustainable cork floor. The office’s reception area features reclaimed stadium seats.
• Eighty-eight percent of office equipment is Energy Star rated, and with the installation of water restriction devices, the office’s water use is expected to be cut by nearly a third. Renewable energy certificates were also purchased to offset emissions from electricity use.
• In collaboration with L2Patridge, the interior architect, Thornton Tomasetti acted as its own LEED consultant and commissioning agent, utilizing the expertise of its Building Sustainability practice and MEP team.

“As big advocates for sustainability on our projects, it’s only natural for Thornton Tomasetti to practice sustainability on the corporate side as well. The Philadelphia office is proud to be the second of the firm’s U.S offices to achieve LEED Gold certification, and we look forward to discovering additional ways we can make our office environment sustainable.”
