A total of 5,500 cubic yards of concrete was placed for the mat foundation for the Austin Proper Hotel & Residences, a Thornton Tomasetti project in Texas, this past weekend. The pour, which began at 11 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, continued for some 24 hours.
The project is a 35-story tower consisting of 99 residential condominiums and penthouses atop a 243-room hotel with amenities and retail at the base. The structural frame is all concrete construction, with a center concrete core used for lateral stability and 8-inch flat post-tensioned floor slabs. The mat foundation varies from 9 feet, 6 inches below the core to 6 feet below the tower, and 4 feet below the podium.
Subcontractors hard at work to ensure that the concrete is evenly spread and properly vibrated. Dowels for the core wall and columns are in place prior to pouring the mat foundation.
Thornton Tomasetti’s Los Angeles office is providing structural engineering services to Handel Architects. The owner is the Kor Group of Los Angeles. Trammell Crow Company is the development manager, with Austin Commercial LP serving as general contractor. The LEED Gold-registered project is set to open in 2018.
