Sergio de Gaetano is director of the Thornton Tomasetti Building Skin practice, drawing on his more than 13 years of international experience in façade engineering and consultancy with an extensive working knowledge of complex, high-performance cladding and glass systems. His current façade engineering credits include Hongqiao SOHO in Shanghai, an iconic mixed-use development by Zaha Hadid; VTB Arena in Moscow (host of the 2018 World Cup) by Manica Architecture and clad with ETFE pillows; and a major football venue in the Middle East. His past project experience at previous firms includes the new extension to the Tate Modern in London with Herzog & de Meuron; the new Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg with Grimshaw; the Pirelli Headquarters in Milan with Gregotti; and the Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, the largest indoor theme park in the world.

In addition to professional practice, Sergio is a visiting professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Brescia in Italy. He is also a regular speaker at prestigious international conferences that include the GPD Finland and IABSE (International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering) symposia. He is a Chartered member of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK) and an active member of Society of Façade Engineering and IABSE. He holds a five-year Master’s Degree in building engineering from Politecnico di Bari, Italy in 1998.
