Sustainability
At Thornton Tomasetti we recognize that the design and construction industry needs to make critical contributions toward addressing the environmental challenges of our time. As engineers and architects we are called upon to realize buildings that use material, energy and water resources efficiently and do not inflict harm on their occupants. Our business strategy and actions are guided by this recognition.
In 2010 Thornton Tomasetti became the first predominantly structural design firm to sign the AIA 2030 Commitment, promoting carbon-neutral buildings as a key ingredient toward a sustainable built environment. To meet this commitment, we are implementing a system to quantify, track and ultimately reduce the embodied energy and carbon values of the structures we design.
Adopting this commitment goes hand in hand with our Building Sustainability practice’s delivery of high-performance sustainable design solutions to our clients – on new construction and existing building projects of all sizes and types:
• Sustainable Building Strategies
• LEED Consulting & Administration
• Innovation in Green Building
• Energy & Daylight Modeling
• Owner’s Sustainability Representative
• Education & Training
As an international firm we work on projects exposed to a wide range of climates – from hot and dry in the Middle East to cold and snowy in Russia – and thus subjected to a wide range of sustainability challenges. Through our integrated practices we work to realize sustainable design outcomes – from thermally efficient building envelopes devised by our Building Skin practice to material efficient structural systems. We participate in integrated design processes and delivery models whenever possible, and always welcome opportunities to engage with all stakeholders on how to formulate and implement the optimal sustainability strategy for a project.
Thornton Tomasetti strives to provide a workplace where the high value we place on sustainability is reflected not only in our work product but in our day-to-day business operations as well. Our business operations and practices aim to shrink our environmental footprint by reducing waste generation and limiting our consumption of energy and other resources. We continually educate our employees on sustainability practices and provide support for all staff members who want to obtain or maintain a LEED AP or LEED Green Associate credential.
We are certain that the building model of the future will be dramatically “greener” than that of the past – any other scenario is simply, well, unsustainable. We are firmly committed to contribute our part to this transformation to a more sustainable built environment.
