Sustainability

Thornton Tomasetti recognizes the value of sustainability and the environmental impact of our projects and services. As the building industry is being transformed by the growing importance of sustainable design and construction practices, epitomized by the success of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems, Thornton Tomasetti is positioned to anticipate the needs of the market. Our 180+ LEED accredited professionals have the expertise and resources to address sustainability and effectively utilize the LEED rating systems on the full range of new construction and existing building projects.

As a member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), we are committed to contribute to buildings that are environmentally responsible and provide healthful places to live and work. We participate in and promote early integrated design processes whenever possible to maximize synergies and environmental benefits through collaboration across design disciplines.

Thornton Tomasetti offers a wide range of sustainability-related consulting services, including general goal-setting guidance, LEED administration, building performance audits, building systems analysis and upgrades, energy modeling and other building simulations. Our multidisciplinary LEED-accredited staff (architects, structural engineers, and MEP engineers) has the ability to holistically evaluate building designs and existing structures and determine the relative environmental pros and cons of particular design decisions as well as associated economic parameters.

In our capacity as structural engineers we have the ability to contribute to sustainability goals via the use of recycled and/or local materials, cement reduction, and early collaboration with other design parties in order to realize synergies such as thermal mass effects and optimized day lighting. Approximately 10% of the world’s LEED-accredited structural engineers work at Thornton Tomasetti, and since the inception of the LEED rating system, we have worked on more than 60 LEED projects.

Thornton Tomasetti has started an ambitious initiative towards the LEED accreditation of all of our employees and established a Sustainability Group of dedicated LEED APs to implement the tools and resources of the LEED rating systems and sustainability into all of our projects throughout all project phases. Thornton Tomasetti’s Sustainability Group is participating in the sustainable design community and continually strives to educate ourselves and others about advances in sustainable building technologies.

Thornton Tomasetti’s operations and practices are guided by our Sustainability Policy, which ensures that the environmental impact of our actions is always taken into account. We continually seek to improve the internal operations of our own offices towards more sustainable practices reflective of our commitment to the environment.
