A ceremony was held in late May on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for the 34-story Citizen360 luxury residential building, which officially topped out concrete this month. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services from schematic design to construction administration to developer Anbau and SHoP Architects for the project at 360 East 89th St. The 212,325-square-foot tower will contain 3,265 square feet of retail on the ground floor, 84 residential units, a 22-car parking garage and various other amenities. The structural system consists of a reinforced concrete core with link beams and reinforced concrete perimeter columns. The floor system is flat plate concrete construction. The building utilizes sloping columns to create column-free space for the ground floor retail as well as in the tower’s residential floors. Once sufficiently above neighboring structures, a portion of the tower cantilevers 8 feet on the western face, gaining an additional 350 square feet per floor. The columns supporting this area were sloped into the cantilevered section over three floors, keeping the columns at the façade face and allowing for the maximum amount of clear interior space. We also designed the support structure for the tower’s façade. Occupancy is planned for early 2017.
