(New York, N.Y. – May 12, 2011) –Shareholders of the international engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti voted today to appoint senior principals Bruce Gibbons, P.E., S.E., CEng, LEED AP, and Gary Panariello, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., to the firm’s board of directors.

Bruce Gibbons leads the firm’s U.S. West region, coordinating the operations of the firm’s five California offices. He joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2004 to found the Los Angeles office, and has more than 25 years of international experience in the design, specification and construction of a wide variety of structures. His expertise in complex and expressive structures spans all market sectors including sports facilities, transit centers and airports, performing arts centers, museums, commercial buildings and educational facilities.

Gibbons is a licensed professional and structural engineer in California and a Chartered Structural Engineer in the United Kingdom. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil and structural engineering from Sheffield University and a master’s degree in concrete structures from Imperial College London.

A recognized expert in forensic engineering, Panariello leads Thornton Tomasetti’s Building Performance practice. He has more than 25 years of experience in the research, design, investigation and construction of a wide range of complex structures. His specialties include the dynamics of structures subjected to earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural and man-made events, structural failure investigations, advanced analysis and emergency response. He joined the firm in 2001.

He is a licensed professional engineer in nine states, a licensed structural engineer in California and a Special Inspector in Florida. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from The Johns Hopkins University, and Master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering and engineering mechanics from Columbia University. Panariello has served as an adjunct professor at Columbia University since 2004.
