Design Team For Mirax Group’s Federation Tower In Moscow Awarded Fiabci Prix D’excellence

June 02, 2009

Thornton Tomasetti, Inc. is the structural engineer and façade and specialty glass consultant for the Federation Tower Complex (Tower A and Tower B) in Moscow, Russia.

On May 21, 2009, Tower B, completed in 2008, was honored with the prestigious International Real Estate Federation “FIABCI Prix d’Excellence” award in the office building category, awarded to Mirax Group – Federation Tower’s well known Russian developer. The award recognizes worldwide projects that best embody excellence in all the real estate disciplines involved in its creation, and best illustrating the FIABCI ideal of “providing society with the optimal solution to its property needs.”

Judged by an international panel comprising top real estate professionals and experts, the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence rewards overall merit and not just aesthetics, functionality or size. The Prix d’Excellence includes both new and mature properties. Projects are judged according to: architecture and design; development and construction; community benefits and environmental impact; and financial viability and marketability.

Over the 17 years of the Prix d’Excellence existence, the prize has been awarded to such projects as the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (another Thornton Tomasetti engineered project), the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (Spain), Disneyland Paris, and the stadium in Hong Kong.

Upon its completion in 2010, Tower A of the Federation Tower Complex will be the tallest building in Europe at 1,181 feet. Located in Moscow’s business district, this 95-story skyscraper will provide accommodation for offices, a hotel, leisure facilities and luxury apartments. Adjacent to Tower A, Tower B is its 66-story twin. In between, the 450-meter stiletto-like central mast with the spire connects these two sail-shaped buildings.

Federation Tower is the first project in Russia utilizing super high-strength concrete and steel technology. The two towers and the mast will also be connected via three glass covered bridges.

“I could not be happier for Mirax Group in winning this award, and I look forward to its growing success in the future. I especially admire Mirax’s determination and commitment to a company-wide vision that sees no obstacle as insurmountable,” said Leonid Zborovsky, Thornton Tomasetti principal on the project. “Even considering Thornton Tomasetti’s impressive history of high-rise design, the Federation Tower is among the most complex and challenging projects we have ever undertaken.”
