(New York, NY – September 24, 2009) Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm with practices in building structure, building skin and building performance, was the structural engineer for three New York-based projects receiving top honors from New York Construction magazine. Yankee Stadium received the distinguished overall project of the year award, New York Law School’s new academic building secured the best project management award and the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital won a health care merit award.

The all-star design team of Thornton Tomasetti and Populous designed the award-winning Yankee Stadium. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering on the new stadium, which includes signature design features such as the world-famous frieze, a 500-foot-wide scoreboard/video board with cantilevered end bays, and suite level and upper deck seating that cantilevers 50 feet beyond the main level concourse, creating widely hailed unobstructed views. The design process utilized building information modeling to enhance design and fabrication efficiency and produce a structure that is elegant both technically and visually.

Thornton Tomasetti, along with architecture firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, were on the design team for the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The project is distinguished by signature high-performance façade elements, including the first climate wall constructed in New York City. The hospital’s expansion enhances and provides additional hospital functions, including new operating rooms, dialysis, patient procedures, an auditorium, and conferencing centers.

Thornton Tomasetti, in collaboration with New York-based architecture firms SmithGroup, Inc. and BKSK Architects, performed structural design for New York Law School’s new academic center in TriBeCa. The project was constructed in two phases. Phase I consisted of a new 250,000-SF building, which has four levels below grade and five above. The building is a top-down construction and houses all of the law school’s classrooms, a cafeteria, a library and an event space. Phase II consisted of the conversion of three historic buildings, two five-story structures built in the late 1800s and one 1920s 10-story building—from classrooms/offices to office space.

A panel of notable judges from across the region selected New York Construction’s Best Projects of 2009. The judges chose 45 unique projects worth recognizing out of 150 projects entered in the magazine’s annual competition this year. All of the winning projects will be featured in the December issue of New York Construction and honored at the Best Of Awards Breakfast in New York City on December 10, 2009.

Yankee Stadium was nominated by Turner Construction Company, New York Law School’s New Academic Building was recommended by Pavarini McGovern and the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital was submitted by Thornton Tomasetti.
