What: Dennis Poon, managing principal of Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm with practices in building structure, building skin and building performance, will be a featured speaker at the “Shanghai Skyline” lecture series at the Skyscraper Museum in New York City. Mr. Poon is overseeing the structural engineering of Shanghai Tower, which is the tallest building in China, designed by Gensler.

This event is part of a city-wide lecture series presented in conjunction with the Skyscraper Museum’s exhibition China Prophecy. This series explores the sensational growth of Shanghai’s skyline over the past three decades.

When: Thursday, October 20, 2009 at 6:30 PM

Where: The Skyscraper Museum – The Lila Acheson Wallace Auditorium, Asia Society 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street) New York, NY

Who: Dennis Poon, managing principal of Thornton Tomasetti

Why: With the municipal government as a client partner, the 632-meter Shanghai Tower asserts the city’s ambitions and commitment to high-rise urbanism. Shanghai Tower’s spiraling form and double-skin facade emphasizes sustainable values. The Tower will overtop the adjacent Shanghai World Financial Center by more than 400 feet and is planned for completion in 2014. Mr. Poon will discuss the challenges of undertaking such an innovative design with a double façade and a series of stacked “inner buildings.”
