Dennis Poon Presents Shanghai Tower at ASCE Seminar in New York City

What: Dennis Poon, managing principal of Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm with practices in building structure, building skin and building performance, will be a featured speaker at American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in New York City. Mr. Poon will present a seminar entitled “The Tallest Tower in China – Shanghai Tower.” In addition to overseeing the structural engineering of the Shanghai Tower, Mr. Poon is working on other supertall projects, including 151 Incheon Twin Tower in Korea and Ping An Tower in China.

Structural engineers at Thornton Tomasetti and architects from Gensler Architects teamed together to create the new 632-meter-tall high Shanghai Tower in the city’s super high-rise precinct. The new tower takes inspiration from Shanghai’s strong tradition of neighborhoods, recast in high-density urban form.

The discussion will include the building concept, framing, structural analysis, its geotechnical conditions and the unique design challenges of this structure.
