The Johns Hopkins Hospital New Clinical Building Pedestrian Bridges
Baltimore, Md.
Thornton Tomasetti’s structural design of this new healthcare facility includes three pedestrian bridges, one of which was put into place last month. The 120-ft., diagonal-truss bridge was assembled on the ground and lifted into place by a crane. It spans Orleans Street and connects the children’s tower to an existing parking garage that was designed by Thornton Tomasetti as a separate project. Another 250-ft. hammer-head bridge connects the adult tower to a stair tower and pedestrian bridge over Orleans Street that was designed and constructed as part of the garage project. The existing bridge and stair had to remain operational throughout the construction of the new link. The third structure is a 30-ft., multi-level single-span bridge that is laterally cantilevered off the hospital slabs. The architect is Perkins + Will.
