Baku Residential Complex
Baku, Azerbaijan

We completed design development for this crescent-shaped residential complex in the capital of Azerbaijan. We are providing structural engineering and Building Skin services to Heerim Architects and Planners for the complex. The project comprises two residential towers (46 stories and 37 stories) with a five-story podium and three levels below grade. The towers have a dual lateral structural system consisting of special reinforced concrete shear walls and a special reinforced concrete moment frame. Baku means “field wind,” and wind gusts in the city are particularly strong and constant. The design wind speed is 53 meters per second (50-year, three-second gust), similar to that of Florida. The 46-story tower is equipped with a 300-ton supplemental tuned sloshing damper at the top of the roof to mitigate building acceleration. Baku is also a heavy seismic zone and restrictive seismic system and detailing requirements had to be met. Construction is estimated to be complete in 2012.
