We are providing structural engineering services to Ann Beha Architects for the renovation/adaptive reuse of the Chicago Theological Seminary, which will be converted into the Milton Friedman Institute. Additionally, we are providing structural engineering services to Harboe Architects for repairs and restorations to the roof, windows and façade. The building, located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, was constructed in two phases between 1923 and 1926. It is approximately 33,000 sf, has masonry bearing wall construction and two garden areas. Thornton Tomasetti is developing and coordinating a comprehensive structural sampling plan of the building’s concrete and masonry materials to determine their structural and chemical properties. Based on the results of those tests and the architectural program for the building spaces, we will analyze the existing structural elements for their ability to withstand the new intended use, and will design reinforcements where necessary.
