Repairs to the façade of the 34-story, landmark New York Central Building are now complete. We investigated the façade conditions, specified repairs and administered repair construction for the building, which was constructed in 1929. The project included: pointing most of the joints between the unusual variegated terra cotta bricks; stabilizing 32 massive terra cotta brackets near the top of the building with special stainless steel anchors embedded in pressure injected grout; pointing and restoring 32 three-story, freestanding terra cotta columns and top brackets; pinning, restoring and pointing other terra cotta ornamentation, including 80 20-foot-tall buffalo heads and flower medallions; cleaning and pointing limestone cladding at the lower floors; replacing the deteriorated copper cap flashing of the upper level water tables with new copper; and pointing and sealing masonry and resealing windows with silicone. We also restored the statuary and clock above the 46th St. entrance.
