We have completed structural design for the new 60,000-sf Federation of Italian-American Organizations building. The architect is Gensler. The new state-of-the-art facility will house a senior citizens center, an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium and a performing arts auditorium. It will serve the entire community. The five-story building, with one level below grade, is composite steel frame with slab on concrete deck and a braced-frame lateral system. It features an occupied roof at 90 feet above grade. Challenges included designing the long-span framing for the pool on the fifth floor, which is above a full gymnasium. Pool support members also serve as transfer girders for the column supports of the set back long-span occupied roof above the pool. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2012.
