The Jayne House & Philadelphia Main Post Office — 2011 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards

Philadelphia, Pa.

Two Thornton Tomasetti historic preservation projects have won 2011 Pennsylvania Preservation Awards, presented by Preservation Pennsylvania, a private non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of historically and architecturally significant properties. We provided structural engineering services to John Milner Architects for the restoration and renovation of the Jayne House in Philadelphia, designed by Frank Furness in 1895. The project returned the National Register building, which has undergone many alterations through the years, to its original use as a family residence. Work included a new terra cotta roof to match the original, a full exterior masonry restoration/conservation and removal of numerous office partitions. The Philadelphia Main Post Office renovation and office conversion included a seismic assessment, removal of several interior bays to create a four-story interior atrium, design of blast reinforcing for the building envelope, a mechanical room addition at track level and preservation of the retail corridor. The 900,000-sf building was completed in 1935. Architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson was the client.
