We are providing structural peer review services through schematic design and design development to a consortium led by Heerim Architects & Planners for a 350,000-m2 terminal expansion. Thornton Tomasetti was part of the team led by Heerim and Mooyoung with design architect Gensler, which was selected from nine others competing. The low structural fee allocated for the project led us to reduce our original role from structural engineer to peer reviewer. The 800- by 1,200-m terminal, designed to resemble an encounter between two phoenixes, will house a ticketing hall, concession/retail and a concourse with 72 gates. It features a long-span, vaulted, space-frame roof with a partially glazed, partially metal exterior. The lateral load resisting system is a longitudinal and transverse intermediate steel moment frame. Expansion joints spaced throughout the terminal allow for movement due to temperature and seismic forces. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2017.
