Renovation and Conversion of 30th St. Main Post Office
Philadelphia, Pa.

We are in the last stage of structural modifications for the complex renovation and conversion to office use of the 880,000-SF historic Main Post Office for architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The project includes a seismic assessment of the existing building, removal of several interior bays to create an interior atrium, design of blast reinforcing for the glass atrium roof, a mechanical room addition at track level and preservation of the retail corridor. The entire building footprint is located over Amtrak’s northeast corridor. Challenges include suspending pits for new elevators from the existing framing, rebuilding deteriorated framing at the active track level and reinforcing existing structures for new high-density file systems. The IRS and General Services Administration (GSA) will occupy the building. Construction will be complete in 2010 and the project is on track to receive LEED certification.
