Gateway Community College
New Haven, Conn.

Construction is scheduled to begin on the 365,000-SF Gateway Community College for which we are providing structural engineering services for Perkins + Will, and which will be the first LEED-Gold-certified project in Connecticut. The college is relocating to downtown New Haven on the former sites of the Macy’s and Malley’s department stores. The campus will consist of two four-story buildings connected by a multi-story, sun-lit atrium with a series of cascading stairs running the length of the building and providing casual seating for students and faculty. A 600-car parking garage will be built into the site. The chief design challenge is transplanting a sprawling college campus to two city blocks separated by a busy one-way thoroughfare. The college is scheduled to open in September 2012.
