Blythedale Children’s Hospital Modernization
Valhalla, N.Y.
Ground was recently broken for the Blythedale Children’s Hospital modernization project, for which we are providing structural engineering services for architect MorrisSwitzer Environments for Health. The project involves construction of a new, two-level 55,760-SF inpatient care wing with 86 beds. The new addition is a steel-framed structure, with ordinary moment frames as the lateral system. Architectural features include the entrance canopy, a rotunda and screen walls above the roof. The hospital is designed to have a natural, non-institutional look to nurture the young patients. Established in 1891, Blythedale Hospital is the only independent, free-standing children’s rehabilitation hospital in New York State and is the only hospital in the state with its own on-site school district. Construction is scheduled to be complete by December 2010.
