Golden State Warriors Sports and Entertainment Arena
San Francisco, Calif.

Thornton Tomasetti completed conceptual design for a multi-purpose arena that will serve as the home of the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors. Slated to open for the 2017-18 NBA season, the 728,000-sf, 18,000-seat facility is being designed by the architectural team of Snøhetta and AECOM. Located next to San Francisco’s Bay Bridge on Piers 30-32, the arena will be just north of AT&T Park, the Major League Baseball stadium designed by Thornton Tomasetti in the late ’90s. Its design calls for abundant public access space on the pier and includes a fire station with berths for three…

Five Crescent Drive Gets LEED Platinum
Philadelphia, Pa.

The new four-story office building for pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has received LEED Platinum certification. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services to Liberty Property Trust for the project, which reached substantial completion in February. Located at the 70-acre Philadelphia Navy Yard Corporate Center, the 205,000-sf building features open workspaces for increased interaction and communication. Sloping columns and off-center cores provided a challenge for the design of load paths. The fast-track project schedule required early release of foundation and steel packages, with steel erect…

Washington, D.C.

Two Thornton Tomasetti projects received top honors at the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington’s 2013 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Gala held on Feb. 23. The D.C. Metro Suburban Office Building was given the top award for structural renovations over $25 million. We provided structural design to architect Gensler for the fast-track project, which consisted of a 650,000-sf, three-building office complex composed of one two-story building constructed in 1954 and two four-story buildings from 1960 and 1985. We added a series of steel braced frames around t…

7 Bryant Park Breaks Ground
New York, N.Y.

Ground was broken on Feb. 25 for 7 Bryant Park, a 28-story, 470,000-sf trophy-class office tower in Midtown Manhattan. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering, connection design and Tekla modeling services to Hines for the project designed by Henry N. Cobb and Yvonne Szeto of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. Located at the corner of 40th Street and Sixth Avenue, the glass and steel building will offer tenants a range of floor plans as well as views of Bryant Park and the historic New York Public Library. The corner main entrance will feature sloping columns that create a striking two-cone design that converges at the 10th floor. The structural system consists of a core-first concrete co…

Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility
Argonne, Ill.

Steel topped out on Jan. 14 for the one-story, 55,500-sf laboratory building at Argonne National Laboratory, which will be one of the leading facilities for protein research in the U.S. when it opens in 2014. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services to SmithGroupJJR for the project. The new laboratory complements the adjacent U.S. Department of Energy’s Structural Biology Center, to which it is connected by a 93-ft.-long, above-ground corridor, and is designed to house up to 76 researchers and support staff. The building’s design required strict vibration control for sensitive laboratory equipment. In addition to lab space, it will have 10,700 sf of office sp…
