For the fourth year in a row, Thornton Tomasetti has voluntarily neutralized its carbon emissions from air travel through the purchase of carbon offsets. In 2017, our employees took 3,003 flights to conduct business and traveled 8,235,268 miles by plane. These flights contributed to 1,316,740 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions; accounting for 23.42% of Thornton Tomasetti’s 2017 total carbon footprint.
We purchase carbon offsets credits from Carbonfund.org, a non-profit organization that acts as an offsets provider. The carbon offsets are donations to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects selected by Carbonfund.
Our big goal is to achieve climate neutral business operations by the year 2030. As part of the strategy for getting there, we reduce what we can and offset what we can’t. We understand that air travel is often a necessity of our work. While we purchase offsets, we also constantly look for ways to reduce the environmental impacts from traveling. For example, employees are encouraged to hold virtual meeting when possible, and most offices are equipped with videoconferencing equipment. We also encourage taking alternative modes of transportation when feasible, and choosing direct flights rather than ones that make stops en route.
