Behnam Arya has more than 20 years of experience conducting forensic investigations as well as in structural analysis and design. An expert in damage detection and condition assessments, he oversees analysis and testing for Thornton Tomasetti’s Forensics practice.

Forensics Expertise
Behnam is highly skilled in advanced computer modeling and analysis for hazard mitigation, structural failure investigations involving natural and man-made disasters and construction defects. He has performed post-earthquake damage assessments and analysis of buildings following the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California and 2010-11 Canterbury earthquake sequence in Christchurch, New Zealand. He conducted wind damage assessments and analysis of building structures after hurricanes Andrew, Charley and Wilma in Florida, Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi, Hurricane Ike in Texas and CAT-90 Sandy in New Jersey. Behnam is skilled in providing litigation support for engineering-related disputes, including construction and design defects. He directed destructive testing at the 26-story Harmon Hotel concrete structure in Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of an investigation into construction defects. Behnam was an integral member of the structural engineering team that investigated the World Trade Center collapse following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York.

Contributions to the Industry
An active member of several professional and technical committees, Behnam frequently presents at industry events. He has published more than 30 papers in journals and national and international conference proceedings, including coauthoring the American Society of Civil Engineers Forensic Practices Committee’s “Guidelines for Forensic Engineering Practice (Second Edition).”

Outside of Work
Behnam lives in Los Angeles with his wife and young son. The family enjoys exploring local attractions like museums and parks. A self-professed world news junkie, he also loves reading about science and watching science fiction movies. He is also a talented cook.
