I enjoy taking an architect’s concept and developing a solution for an unusual shape or structural system.

With more than 25 years of experience in the AEC industry, Derek Wassink specializes in structural design and analysis, project management and coordination, and project delivery methods. His portfolio runs across all sector types, including office, residential, healthcare, education, hospitality, recreation and parking. Derek’s strong suit is complex concrete post-tension structures, particularly high- and mid-rise residential and hotel buildings.

Derek joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2015. During his career, he has held various management positions in Florida and the Eastern U.S.

Academic and Community Contributions
Derek served as an adjunct professor at Florida International University’s Graduate School of Architecture. For more than 10 years, he has volunteered as a structural specialist for FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force One, providing engineering support during natural and man-made disasters.

Outside of Work
Derek enjoys the South Florida lifestyle. He plays tennis, goes boating and has been an avid scuba diver for more than 20 years. When it comes to his absolute favorite pastime, Derek loves nothing more than being on the croquet court with mallet in hand. He plays the sport competitively and has won tournaments in the U.S. and internationally, including in Palm Beach, Florida, Southampton and Manhattan’s Central Park in New York, and the West Indies.
