A resident engineer has to be able to assess and solve problems on the spot, all while keeping in mind the project budget, schedule and safety.

Frank Fierro is a principal in Thornton Tomasetti’s Weidlinger Transportation practice. He has more than 35 years of experience providing design, construction support and resident engineering services and is responsible for the growth of those services across the firm.

Specialty in Long-Span Bridges
Frank is skilled in providing construction engineering for long-span bridges where so many challenging issues are encountered. He has been serving as the resident engineer for the Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrytown for the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) since 1992, and has worked on more than 14 projects for the NYSTA, all related to the Tappan Zee Bridge as well as being involved in the slab replacements and repairs on the New England Thruway. Frank has applied his considerable experience to the design of other long-span structures in the New York metropolitan area, including the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and several arterial bridges throughout Brooklyn and Queens boroughs. He has led construction inspection and support teams for numerous bridge rehabilitation projects.

Outside of Work
Frank enjoys spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren. He is an active member of the Andretta Cultural Society, an Italian-American organization in Westchester County, New York that sponsors community activities and charity events. He is an avid photographer and videographer and likes hunting. Frank is also a sports fan and enjoys watching New York Yankees baseball and follows several Italian soccer teams.
