With finite element analysis increasingly being used to determine how structures respond to extreme events, it is vital to underpin that with the solid validation and verification that comes from quality experimental and trials work.

Gavin Colliar has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of structural engineering and engineering mechanics relating to structural integrity, safety risk assessments and non-linear dynamic modeling of naval and offshore structures. He oversees all experimental and trials work undertaken by Thornton Tomasetti’s defence business and has led several major trials across Europe and North America.

Experimental and Trial Work
His primary duties as trials officer and lead engineer in all aspects of testing and experimental work includes organizing and executing trials involving the management of both firm personnel and third-party contractors and specifying and procuring all instrumentations, data acquisition and sensors associated with structural and high pressure transient responses. Gavin also provides specifications and supervision of the design and manufacture of test fixtures and vehicles.

Outside of Work
Gavin has a busy family life and enjoys walking in the beautiful Scottish countryside with his family and dog. Gavin, a music fan, likes to play the guitar. He enjoys running, golf and squash as well as watching all types of sports, and has a keen interest in cinema and travel.
