Jim Cohen has more than 35 years of experience in forensic engineering, with specializations in failure investigation, disaster response and mitigation, repair and rehabilitation and advanced analytics. His diverse project work includes investigating major building collapses, designing repairs for historic structures, assessing hurricane and seismic damage, emergency shoring and flood mitigation. He has worked across all market sectors and around the globe.
Litigation Support Expertise
Over the course of his career, Jim has provided expert witness services and litigation support for numerous collapse and engineering-related disputes, including those related to natural and man-made disasters as well as construction and design defects. He has appeared on cable news network MSNBC as an expert on construction failures. Jim has provided expert witness testimony in U.S. Federal and state courts on numerous occasions.
Contributions to the Profession
Jim is a frequent lecturer and presenter on failure investigation, emergency response and other topics. He is also active in various professional organizations. He has chaired or served on several committees for such organizations as the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASTM International, International Concrete Repair Institute and National Institute of Building Sciences. In 2016, he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center Committee of the Pennsylvania Builders Association.
Outside of Work
When not engaged in client-related work or spending time with family, Jim likes to focus on issues concerning public safety and welfare. He lends a hand whenever an opportunity arises, whether it’s providing volunteer technical assistance to disaster mitigation and recovery efforts or helping the homeless. Jim also works to lessen humanity’s impact on the environment through sustainable measures.
