Jianhai has a geographically diverse portfolio, having worked on projects on five continents.

Jianhai Liang has extensive experience in the structural analysis and design of commercial high-rise buildings, long-span structures, institutional facilities and industrial complexes around the world. As a technical leader with our Pacific Rim team, he is responsible for design development, construction administration, project management and peer review.

Creative Solutions
Throughout his career, Jianhai has specialized in the structural design of large-scale and uniquely challenging projects, working in collaboration with such architects as Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, Gensler, and Kohn Pedersen Fox. His resume includes the twisting triangular form of the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, which is the tallest building in China, and the complicated multifaceted geometry of Chengdu Greenland Center, a mixed-use complex featuring a 486-meter tower, two smaller towers and a podium.

Seismic Design Expertise
Having worked on tall and supertall building projects in such earthquake-prone areas as Southwest China, the Western United States and Central America, Jianhai has extensive background in performance-based seismic design. He uses advanced analytical tools and techniques to develop the most appropriate seismic-force-resisting system for a structure. He is a co-author of Thornton Tomasetti’s internal guidelines for tall building design and performance-based design.

Outside of Work
Being the father of two young sons doesn’t leave Jianhai much time for leisure activities. When he is able to find a few free moments, he enjoys playing tennis and tending his garden. In addition to raising flowers and vegetables, Jianhai also maintains several fruit trees.
