The terminal redevelopment project is set to transform the facility into a modern, high-capacity hub, enhancing both domestic and international travel.
overview
The SAT terminal redevelopment project is set to transform the facility into a modern, high-capacity hub, enhancing both domestic and international travel. The new gateway terminal was designed to seamlessly integrate Terminal A with Terminal B and will add 18 gates, expanding the airport’s capacity and improving the passenger experience.
We are providing structural design and protective design and security services to Corgan, part of the design team along with Lake|Flato Architects. With features such as advanced landside ticketing, enhanced security screening, spacious holdrooms and a state-of-the-art immigration facility, the project prioritizes efficiency, passenger comfort and streamlined operations, paving the way for a new era of air travel in San Antonio.
highlights
- The site’s expansive soils present a significant challenge. To manage the associated risks, we implemented a framed ground-floor slab over a crawl space, allowing the soil to expand and contract with moisture changes without impacting the structure’s serviceability.
- Building columns will be anchored to deep drilled pier foundations to transfer loads to stable soil beneath the expansive layer.
- A mass timber roof deck with beams and trusses, to be supported by elegant steel Y-columns, will be used to frame the spacious ticketing area, Great Hall meet-and-greet space and Mercado retail concourse, fostering a biophilic environment. This wood framing will seamlessly integrate into the architecture, creating clerestories that welcome natural light into the building.
