Overview

Our firm provided structural design services for The Air Canada Centre when it was completed in 1999. In 2018, we returned when The Air Canada Centre undertook a major renovation and became Scotiabank Arena. As part of that effort, the opportunity arose to modify and introduce new acoustic materials into the arena bowl to moderate its problematic reverberant behaviour.

We recommended acoustic treatment options for the arena bowl and the ScotiaClub lounge area to Gensler for the renovation, which completed in 2019.

Highlights

  • As part of the rebranding, new electronic signage depicting the new brand logo was installed on the vertical fascia in four corners of the upper bowl and changes were made to the acoustic treatment in the corners and at the end of the gondola.
  • We measured the RT60 and STI at various locations in the arena bowl and provided general acoustic treatment recommendations to improve the acoustic performance of the spaces.
  • We also provided baseline acoustic characteristics of the arena bowl to guide the design of future acoustic treatment and/or sound system improvements.
