PETCO Park, home to the San Diego Padres, is located within two miles of an active fault and is designed to meet the
Uniform Building Code (UBC) requirements for Seismic Zone Four. A noteworthy feature of the stadium is the exclusive
use of structural steel above the main concourse level, where structural members are left exposed as key elements in
the architectural design of the ballpark.
At the club and upper concourse levels, the seating cantilevers out from the main support structure 55 feet and 38 feet
respectively, in order to bring fans as close as possible to the game.
PETCO Park represents the first-ever integration of a new ballpark with an existing historic building, in a creative
example of blending the old with the new. The 1910 Western Metal Supply Company building was designated by the city for
historical significance but had deteriorated over time. The design team restored it to its original grandeur and
incorporated it into the structure so spectators are able to enjoy the game from all levels in the building.
