Mercy General Hospital Alex Spanos Heart Center
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for a new four-story heart center tower plus basement. The 121,000-square-foot structure will house 91 beds with a central plant located in a basement. Scope of work includes SPC-2 upgrade of the existing South Wing, a four-story, 110,000-square-foot concrete punched shear wall building built in the 1920’s; a new surface parking lot; and remodeling of the existing north wing, medical office building, and other areas of the hospital.
The new heart center upgrades the South Wing and replaces the existing East wing, which were rated as SPC-1 category under SB1953. The seismic resisting system of the heart center employs “state-of-the-art” buckling-restrained braced frames supported on concrete augered cast-in-place pile foundations.
