Blythedale Children's Hospital Modernization
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for a new two-level 55,760-square-foot inpatient care wing with 86 beds. The new addition is a steel-framed structure, with ordinary moment frames as the lateral system. Architectural features include the entrance canopy, a rotunda and screen walls above the roof.
The hospital is designed to have a welcoming, noninstitutional look to appeal to young patients. Established in 1891, Blythedale Hospital is the only independent, free-standing children’s rehabilitation hospital in New York State and is the only hospital in the state with its own on-site school district.
