Thornton Tomasetti provided structural services for the redevelopment of a 10-acre site in downtown Washington, formerly the site of a convention center. Work included design for two 11-story office buildings and below-grade parking for 1,600 vehicles. The development is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
The project’s two commercial buildings will provide a total of 460,000 square feet of offices and 240,000 square feet of retail and dining and will include partial green roofs. The structures consist of post-tensioned concrete with shear-wall lateral systems.
A four-level underground parking garage was designed as four separate structures connected by expansion joints. Occupying the entire site, the conventionally-reinforced concrete structure serves as the foundation for the office buildings, four residential buildings (designed by others), a public plaza, and a major city street.
