FedEx Airbus Hangar Facility
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for a new A380 hangar facility and support buildings at Memphis International Airport. The hangar is the most prominent structure within the project, with a 400-foot-long main span and 340-foot depth. The main roof steel framing is designed to support six bridge cranes for aircraft maintenance. A new office, shop infill, warehouse, and GSE maintenance building comprise the support facilities.
A challenging element of the project is the site, which is close to the New Madrid Fault zone. Thornton Tomasetti is using the IBC 2003 building code for its structural design of the entire project.
