Gateway Community College Central Campus

We performed structural design for two buildings totaling 360,000 square feet and a nine-level pre-cast concrete parking garage. The four-story academic structures consist of composite steel framing and rest upon spread-footing and mat foundations. The buildings, which are linked by a full-height connector bridge, feature an intricate façade with numerous bump-outs, bump-ups and reveals.

The tight urban site presented a number of design challenges, including the presence of old foundations from demolished buildings, an existing tunnel that runs across the site, and an adjacent hotel loading dock that had to remain in service throughout construction. The structural design had to be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected existing conditions as they were uncovered by excavation.

The new college was designed for sustainability and is pursuing LEED Gold certification. It includes a multi-level student gathering area that steps up from the ground floor to a roof-top garden. The green roof also supports photovoltaic panels on a special framing system.

The project also includes structural design for a 190,000-square-foot parking garage. Nestled behind one of the academic buildings, it will provide space for 600 vehicles.
