Green Dot Charter Schools, Animo Leadership High School, in Inglewood, Calif.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services for the nationally-ranked high school. Located on a tight, 30,300-square-foot site, the three-story building reaches out to the edges of its urban corner site to provide 28 classrooms that accommodate over 500 students annually. Project challenges included designing two separate structures only 1.4 miles from a major active fault. To meet the challenge, we introduced a seismic load-resisting system that combines special steel moment frames and unique concentric-braced frames to withstand high seismic force and torsion effects from horizontal and vertical irregularity.
The $18 million project’s design fosters abundant natural light and ventilation and includes a façade clad with 650 solar panels — features that helped the school earn Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) certification and is seeking LEED certification.
Green Dot Public Schools was founded in 1999 with the goals of improving attrition and graduation numbers, and inspiring students to pursue higher levels of education. In 2013, Newsweek ranked it among the nation’s 2,000 most effective public schools for producing college-ready graduates—and one of the country’s “Top 25 Transformative High Schools” (or “game-changers” for youth below the federal poverty line).
