Luxury Hotel in the Ice District Development in Edmonton, Canada. Courtesy Ice District JV, Inc.
Connected to Rogers Place arena, the luxury hotel offers 362 rooms and suites and 200 condominiums with numerous amenities at podium-level including an outdoor terrace, a pool and fitness facilities. It also houses 24,000 square feet of ballroom, meeting and conference space.
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering for the luxury hotel as part of Phase I for the 16-acre Ice District development. The project team faced a difficult challenge of insufficient foundation capacity to support the 54-story concrete-slab tower. While the soil offered suitable bearing capacity, the underlying rock had marginal bearing and friction capacities requiring long pier lengths to develop the necessary load capacity. To resist wind and seismic forces, the team designed a lateral force resisting system with concrete shear walls around the core, a concrete outrigger midway through the building and a steel outrigger at the top of the building to reduce the overall building weight.
Thornton Tomasetti is also providing structural and façade engineering for the adjacent Rogers Place. Phase I of Ice District is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
