Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design services for the University of Wisconsin’s Kohl Center featuring the first use of rigging level at tension ties, which created a 100-foot by 200-foot, obstruction-free and flat working platform. The facility also utilized economical precast plank and cast-in-place beams for the superstructure framing system of this 470,000-square-foot facility.

Located on the southeast side of the University campus, the Kohl Center supports the Badgers Men’s and Women’s basketball and hockey teams as well as provides accommodations for practice, study, and spacious offices for coaching staff. Two overhanging balconies keep fans engaged and close to the action taking place on the floor without obstructed views.
