Overview

Weidlinger Protective Design, which became a Thornton Tomasetti practice in September 2015, provided structural and blast engineering services for the renovation and new construction of the Class A, LEED Gold, FBI Field Office Complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The existing five-story building, originally constructed in the late 1990s as a conventional office building, is located in Saint Francis county on the shores of Lake Michigan, just outside of Milwaukee.

The primary goals of the project were to renovate the office building and construct a new one-story addition adjacent to it to meet the FBI programming requirements. As part of these requirements, Weidlinger designed a new visitor screening facility, a large covered parking structure and miscellaneous rooftop, and ground-level screen wall enclosures.

The office building was gut renovated with varied structural modifications completed to support the modernization of the building systems. Structural modifications and screen wall enclosures were designed to incorporate new programmatic needs, including new floor penetrations, elevator cores, and new mechanical equipment.
