National Palace Museum Southern Branch
Thornton Tomasetti was a member of the winning team selected in the design competition for a new 340,000 gross-square-foot art museum, composed of galleries, collection areas, public spaces and support spaces.
Built on four levels with partial mezzanines, the lower plateau levels provide a solid rigid base and the main galleries are contained in three elevated tube-like structures arranged around a timber pyramid-shaped atrium structure with glass façade, which is called Jade Mountain. The timber atrium supports interconnecting ramp ways. The museum’s structural design responds to the high seismicity of the site and typhoon loading.
