Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for a 54-story office tower with retail podium totaling 1,360,511 square feet of office space and 84,036 square feet of retail. In order to use the existing foundation built for a trapezoidal structure, structural modification to the tower columns and core walls was required to support the new rectangular design. Limited to a maximum height of 250 meters, the structural system comprises columns located at the perimeter of the building with sloping columns at levels one through four to create column-free offices spaces on the upper levels. The building program includes a four-level basement with an 800-car parking garage.
The project is located in the Jing An District, the central commercial district of Shanghai, as part of larger redevelopment program. The project will anchor a new mixed-use development area and sits directly adjacent to a new subway station, which is under construction simultaneously.
