In celebration of the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, Ontario hosted a 38-day event at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. One of the most distinctive features for the event was the Celebration Zone, an open exhibition area located along the waterfront with spaces for live music, ziplining and culinary tastings. It was defined by a series of inflatable pavilions constructed using premium quality, fire retardant, composite textiles selected for their durability, exceptional strength and dimensional stability.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural analysis, formfinding and foundation design for the unique Ontario’s Celebration Zone Pavilion. Structural and pneumatics analyses were performed at multiple scales to guide the design process. Anchoring systems were a critical part of the overall safety for the design. The foundation consists of large ground penetrating screws to resist lateral and uplift forces.
