Thornton Tomasetti was retained to provide structural design and restoration of historic façades as part of the major renovation of an obsolete laboratory building into an academic center. Scope includes a condition assessment and analysis of the original steel casement windows and structural modifications that respect the historic character incorporating sustainable design strategies.

20 Washington Road was constructed in 1929 as a cast-in-place concrete structure with structural interior and exterior masonry walls for supplemental support. The exterior comprises argillite stone walls that are accented by patterns of limestone quoins and arches, window frames with decorative carvings and vaulted ceilings.

Scope of services includes a façade investigation and evaluation, preparation of construction documents and construction phase. Repairs include exterior stone retrofitting of the steel windows and portions of the roof, and a supporting structure will be replaced with skylights.
