Futian Shangri-La consists of a mixed-use development, which includes a 180-meter tall hotel tower, two 100-meter tall office towers, a three-story underground car-parking garage, and a three-story podium functioning as retail space, hotel ballrooms, restaurants, and other hotel facilities. The complex neighbors other top-grade offices and hotels in Shenzhen and it is connected to a newly developed mass transit line.

Thornton Tomasetti’s main scope of work included structural design services for the 180-meter tall hotel tower and the long-span podium structure. The tower was constructed using a conventional concrete beam-slab system, whilst the long-span podium structure used post-tensioned concrete design.

This project provides an excellent example of high rise design and construction under challenging conditions, including severe typhoon wind load, sloping outer column, heavy loaded post tensioned transfer girder and a conservative building code. The design team achieved economical structural solutions without compromising aesthetic design integrity. The result is a beautiful new landmark for the City of Shenzhen.
