Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers
Thornton Tomasetti investigated the causes of widespread distress and deterioration of precast concrete wall panels of this prominent, 52-story, 665-room 1950s hotel tower in midtown New York. We performed a comprehensive up-close evaluation of the panels, including use of physical probes, to determine the underlying causes of the problems. Collaborating closely with the client, we developed appropriate and cost-effective solutions to repair the panels, including re-cladding.
When the client chose re-cladding as the repair solution, we were then retained for exterior wall and structural engineering consulting for the re-cladding project. We performed feasibility studies and prepared schematic drawings in order to reclad the panel wall with an economical, easy-to-maintain metal panel curtain wall system that gave the hotel a modern, sleeker look. The project also included the integration of accent lighting features. We met the challenge of developing a flexible solution that worked with the variable underlying wall conditions and allowed for quick installation.
