Taikoo Hui is a new mixed-use development located in southern China’s largest and most important commercial center. The complex includes two office towers of 50 and 33 stories, a 31-story hotel tower and a six-story podium. The podium, with two stories above grade and four below, is comprised of a retail area and a cultural area featuring a library, a theater and a public arts center. Underground parking for 900 cars and a connection to a nearby metro station are also provided in the podium. The retail area of the podium, features 80-foot clear spans.

Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design services through the design-development phase. One of the most structurally noteworthy aspects of the project is the 1,000-seat theater located in the podium. An innovative “box-in-box” design completely isolates the theater from the surrounding structure so that external vibrations do not affect the theater’s acoustics.
